Harry Toddler
Patrick Ricardo Jackson’s music spans two decades, yet still this star rises. The character projected by ‘Harry Toddler’ has caused him to be re-christened the “Star Angel”, simply because of the love that he has for the projects. This twenty-something DJ, raised in Waltham Park district of Kingston City, was musically inspired by the “Big, Dutty, Stinking Shabba Ranks’. Harry Toddler’s life experience has shown him the good, the bad and the ugly sides of what life can hold, observations he portrays through his lyrics, tackling subjects that others might circumvent or just rather not say. Harry Toddler keeps it real. His first number one record ‘Badman Nuh Dress Like Girl’ – illustrates the point perfectly.
His first recording was for star-maker King Jammy, on his world famous Jammy’s record label. The studio is not far from where Toddler grew up so he would hang out there daily waiting for the chance to show off his colleagues the Scare Dem Crew. The year was 1993 and they went by the name of ‘Seaview Family’ as that’s where the other members of the Scare Dem Crew originated. Toddler based himself in Seaview at that time and in 1994 the crew was renamed a line from a song by their mentor – Bounty Killer, was sampled and the Scare Dem Crew was born. Bounty Killer took them to as many local shows as possible, showcasing their skills to the huge crowds who came to their shows. The crew recorded ‘Bus Up Mi Gun’ for Red Rose and announced themselves to the world in no uncertain terms. The crew became known for their crazy vibes and stage performances, setting new trends in the dancehall theatre with their outlandish hairstyles and dress code. The Scare Dem crew had hit records around the globe as group and Harry Toddler continued to record as a solo artiste with songs like ‘Certain Bwoy’, ‘Bun a Fire Pon a Men’ and ‘Han Mi Di Fire’.
“I had an inspiration to go solo and that’s when my career started to shine!” is how Toddler views the split from the crew that occurred in controversial circumstances at the turn of the New Millennium. The Scare Dem Crew had a lot of overseas dates in the United States for which Harry Toddler had visa-entry difficulties. The pressure on him grew as the rest of the group flew abroad regularly without him. Gossip and malicious lies began to circulate so Harry Toddler began to withdraw himself from the group. A very public altercation on the Solid Agency Celebrity Spring Break stage show, between the Scare Dem Crew’s other three members spelt the end of the crew proper.
Harry Toddler is currently managed by the hot young producer, ‘True Blue’ who is currently co-working on an album to be released later in the year 2001, this will be Toddler’s debut album. His catchphrase “Na Na Na” has captured the imagination of the Jamaican Public and is said by young and old alike!
The limits are boundless for this ‘Angel’ who is spreading his wings far and wide as he soars with his solo career. |
